Colorado Rockies defeat Houston Astros 8-6 – MLB Update
Jonathan Herrera hit a homer on Tuesday, August 23 to assist in the Colorado Rockies win over the Houston Astros 8-6 at Coors Field.
It was the second consecutive win for the Rockies while the Astros have lost their last three consecutive games.
While the offence performed unusually well for the Rockies, there was a defence vulnerability that the team had to overcome. The problem had a lot to do with the pitching as Alex White allowed five runs in the six innings that he pitched.
However, thanks to the offence, the team survived. "It could have been worse with the bases loaded and one out, but we got a groundball right there," White said. "Anytime you give up five runs and your team still wins, I'll take that."
Budd Norris allowed two runs in the first inning that he pitched for the Astros. Bottom of first and Troy Tulowitzki singled right while Todd Helton hit a sacrifice fly to double the team’s lead by the end of the inning.
But Carlos Lee homered for the Astros against Alex White to bring the Rockies lead down to 2-1 something that continued for a while as both the starters threw some good pitches, but the third inning was an opportunity for the Astros to go after Alex White.
Jose Altuve and J. D. Martinez scored a single each to put the Astros in charge of the game with a 3-2 lead. However, Seth Smith hit a single in the bottom of third to level the score for the Rockies. Seth Smith then hit a two run homer to make it 5-3 for
the Rockies.
However, runs kept coming as Jimmy Paredes homered to right against Alex White to level the score once again (5-5) in a game with exciting ups and downs. Carlos Gonzalez of the Rockies hit another single in the sixth to make it 6-5 for the Rockies.
Jordan Schafer tied the score in the seventh – much to the frustration of Alex White. But Jonathan Herrera had the most awaited hit of the night, driving in two-run homer to help the Colorado Rockies go beyond the Astros with 8-6 lead.
The win for Rockies came in the form of a two-run hit by Herrera while it was most needed. "As soon as I hit the ball I knew it was over the fence," Herrera said. "Everybody knows the type of player I am. I'm not supposed to hit homers. I was looking for
a good pitch, trying to put a ball in the hole and put pressure on the defense."
Rex Brothers had a save in the ninth as a closer to wrap up the game with 8-6 victory for the Colorado Rockies.
