Colorado Rockies defeat Houston Astros 9-5 – MLB Update
The Colorado Rockies showed good teamwork against the lowest-ranked Houston Astros as they beat them 9-5 at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado on Monday, August 22.
The home team took complete advantage of the conditions and imposed a thumping six-run lead in the very first inning of the game to layout their intentions.
Carlos Gonzalez was the most prominent batter for the Rockies as he produced three RBIs and two well-constructed runs in five at-bats to improve his current season’s batting average to .288 and slugging percentage to .520.
Gonzalez’s double to the right field in the first inning allowed Eric Young Jr. and Dexter Fowler to complete their runs before Gonzalez completed his run when Todd Helton singled to the centre. Helton, Ty Wigginton and Chris Iannetta were the other scorers
for in the first inning for the Rockies.
Gonzalez then produced a brilliant hit in the second inning which cleared right field by a significant distance to bring up the seventh run for the Rockies as early as the second inning. The Astros did not seem to have a slightest clue as to what was happening
in the game which was clearly dominated by the home team.
Brett Myers was the unlucky starter for the visitors as he leaked seven costly-runs in his five innings at the mound which did not help his earned-run average much. His ERA now stands just below 5 at 4.95 and this was his 13th loss of the season
with just three wins to compliment his losses.
Jhoulys Chacin complimented his batters from the mound as he pitched seven top-quality innings to win his tenth game of the season with as many losses to his credit thus far. Chachin gave away just one run in his spell and struck-out two batters in the process.
With the scorecard showing 9-1 at the end of the eighth inning, the Rockies brought on J.C. Romero to close the game. However, he was not as effective as the other pitchers and gave away four-runs to the Astros. This, however, acted only as a consolation
for Houston who did not have any chance for a comeback in this game.
