Colorado Rockies edge Houston Astros 2-1 at Minute Maid Park – MLB News
Colorado Rockies edged passed the Houston Astros 2-1 on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 in a game that was dominated by some strong pitching at the Minute Maid Park.
Jorge De La Rosa was the starting pitcher for the Colorado Rockies who gave a stellar performance. Pitching seven complete frames, De La Rosa gave away just a single run in five hits.
The performance pleased Walt Weiss, the manager for the Colorado Rockies. Walt knew that his bullpen was not in the best of shape and the starting pitcher had to go deep to provide it with some much needed cushion.
"We were thin in the bullpen after a few extra-inning games, and Jorge gave us exactly what we needed," Weiss said.
He was happy that the objective was achieved by Jorge and he did not let the game get away from the Rockies.
The game was in a stalemate when it entered the ninth innings. The Rockies scored in the top of the first innings courtesy of an RBI single by Troy Tulowitzki.
The Astros were able to come to level terms in the fourth when Chris Carter reached base on fielder’s choice and Carlos Corporan was able to make it to the home plate.
The winning blow for the Colorado ballclub was delivered by Michael Cuddyer. He was able to get an RBI single to the left field as Troy Tulowitzki made it home.
Walt Weiss was overjoyed by the performance of Michael, who was hit on the forearm barely 48 hours back. He said that the right fielder is always on the look out to play and showed how tough he is getting back
on the field in such a hurry.
"It doesn't surprise me with Cuddy," Weiss said. "He's always looking to answer the bell. I'd say maybe a little more than 24 hours ago, I didn't think he'd be playing this early. He's just tough."
The 34-year-old Cuddyer said that he had gotten some curveballs and knew that Jose Veras likes to send them down. He was hoping that he will get another one with a 1-2 count in the pitcher’s favour. Once he did,
Michael made sure that the connection was solid.
"I know Veras loves his curveball, and his first three pitches were that," Cuddyer said. "I was sitting 1-2 with a man on third. I had a good feeling another one was coming. I was fortunate enough to get good
wood on it over the third baseman's head."
The result leaves the series levelled at one game each. The Astros won the previous ballgame in extra innings by a single run. The fans certainly are getting full value for their money and are seeing games that
are going all the way down to the wire.
