Colorado Rockies edge out San Francisco Giants 6-5 as Charlie Blackmon singles in sixth-MLB Update

Third baseman Chris Nelson and right fielder Charlie Blackmon send two base-runners aboard in the sixth as they help the Colorado Rockies edge out the San Francisco Giants 6-5 at Coors Field, Denver, Colorado on September 10, 2012 in the first match of the
three game series.
The series of innings that saw the Rockies adding runs became the source of their survival when the Giants launched a fierce counter-attack during the penultimate innings.
While the Rockies built on their lead that they managed in the first inning, Giants struggled in the beginning.
At the end of the sixth inning, Rockies were leading by four runs. In order to surpass them, Giants needed a spectacular show from their batters.
Interestingly enough they were not far from achieving this in the latter half of the match. When they witnessed their batters posting three runs in two innings, they were about to thwart the Rockies.
Thanks to the immaculate last inning thrown by Rafael Betancourt, Colorado managed to keep the Giants at bay.
Offensively the triple struck by Nelson in the sixth and the single in the same inning by Blackmon proved valuable for Colorado. It was because of the two runs resulting from their hits that they were able to stay ahead of Giants despite the impressive comeback
by them.
Alex White started for Colorado and completed four innings. He yielded six hits and gave up one run.
White is fairly satisfied with his show on Monday. As he was successful in employing all the pitches that he has in his repertoire, the Rockies can take a lot of positives from it.
"I had pretty good command," White said. "Obviously, I fell behind a few times. Pitched pretty well with my four-seam. Used my two-seam when I needed to. Had a good changeup. I threw 76 pitches in four innings. But that's what they asked me to do, so I'm
going to keep doing it."
While starter created problems for the batters, Rockies’ relievers put up a far from satisfactory performance on Monday. Except Betancourt, all of them struggled to avoid hits. At some stage of the game, they brought their team on the brink of defeat.
Rockies will be aware of the weaknesses which were visible during the match. It will be interesting to see how they can carry their winning momentum forward.
