Colorado Rockies’ first baseman Todd Helton arrested driving under the influence of alcohol
Colorado Rockies’ veteran first baseman Todd Helton was arrested under the influence of alcohol around 2 am in the morning on Wednesday when his truck was spotted being driven in an erratic manner. He was booked and later released as per the procedures by
local police.
Colorado has a relatively lenient .08 blood alcohol level limit as opposed to .05 that is legal in most states. The 38-year-old is a 15 year veteran in the Major League and has been a part of the Colorado ball club all through his career.
In a statement that he released after the incident, Todd has taken complete responsibility of the event and has said that he is embarrassed by his actions. He knows that he has always maintained high personal standards and understands that as a public figure,
he is someone who should have been more responsible.
"Last evening, I exercised poor judgment and was charged with drinking and driving after driving to a gas station near my house. I am very sorry and embarrassed by my actions. I hold myself to a high standard and take my responsibility as a public figure
very seriously," Helton said.
He also said that he has always worked hard to set a positive example for others and this time he fell short of those standards
He also requested that his family, his ball club and the baseball community accept his humble apology for the incident that took place.
"I sincerely ask my family, the Colorado Rockies organization, Major League Baseball and the community to accept my apology. I make no excuses and accept full responsibility for my actions. I humbly ask your forgiveness," he said.
Todd has been a star performer for the Rockies over the years and has an amazing .320 batting average and a .419 on-base percentage. The left hander has over 2400 hits, 1345 RBI’s and 354 home-runs in his career spanning over 16 seasons.
The Colorado Rockies also have expressed their disappointment of the event and have made it clear that the incident is not acceptable for the organisation. This was expressed by the ball club in a statement.
"We were extremely disappointed to learn that Todd was arrested this morning. This type of behavior is taken very seriously by our organization," the statement said.
Todd Helton has been one of the better performers for the Colorado Rockies over the years. He has maintained a high standard of discipline and has been a good role model until this Wednesday.
One hopes that this will be a one off incident and he will be forgiven for this by his fans and the ball club as it will not be his defining moment. He is a good player to be remembered for his playing ability rather than a one-time irrational act.
