Colorado Rockies grind out 10-9 victory over San Francisco Giants at Coors Field - MLB News
Colorado Rockies had to grind it out to win against a strong San Francisco Giants outfit with a 10-9 margin on Friday, May 17, 2013 at the Coors Field in front of a 43,000 plus crowd.
It is a welcome win for the home team which blew a six run lead the previous day to lose to the same team. The Colorado ballclub also ended their ten-game losing streak against the Giants.
The Giants were able to get the upper hand at the start of the game and scored four runs in the first two innings before the Rockies registered a single run in the bottom of the second.
The third innings was, however, much more productive for the Colorado ballclub, as they were able to add another three runs to get back on even terms with the Giants. They were aided by a throwing error as well by Angel Pagan as Carlos Gonzalez had hit a single.
The visitors got the lead once again in the next innings courtesy of Pablo Sandoval’s RBI single. The fifth innings proved to be a game changer as the home side was able to get five runs.
After an RBI single by Wilin Rosario, Jordan Pacheco hit the first grand slam of his Major League career to stun the opponents. This was the first home-run of the season for the 27-year-old who is batting at .304 thus far. It also brought an end to the night for Madison Bumgarner who had surrendered nine run in less than five complete innings. Madison recorded the loss against his name.
Carlos Gonzalez homered in the sixth to further strengthen the position. The run eventually proved to be the difference between the two teams. The Giants made some strides back in the game by scoring combined four runs in the seventh and eighth innings but were unable to get the tying run in the ninth to lose the game.
Jorge De La Rosa recorded the win, improving his season record to 5-3. Rafael Betancourt recorded his tenth save for the season as well.
The win leaves the Colorado Rockies in a close third position in the National League West, just a couple of games from joint leaders San Francisco Giants and Arizona Diamondbacks.
The win is sure to boost the morale of the team and they will be hoping to win the series to further strengthen their position in the division.
