Colorado Rockies have some business to attend to in the Winter Meetings - MLB News
The Colorado Rockies are in a decent shape going into the Winter Meetings. One can still expect that the club may be looking to make some changes to their current rosters and look for players that they feel will be useful for them.
The main concern for the Rockies is the starting pitchers. They are looking to add some experience to their relatively young side and the names of Kevin Correia and Jeff Francis have been rumoured as potential pitching free agents the Colorado ball club
may target. They had many young pitchers during Spring Training but were still short on quality pitching resources during the course of the main season.
The Rockies will also be interested in getting a catcher as currently they mainly have Ramon Hernandez and Wilin Rosario. Ramon had hamstring surgery and though Rosario did well with the bat, his time behind the plate was not all that exciting. The club
will probably be looking for a Minor League deal for now to offer in the catching department.
Colorado will have some trade chips in Nashville, Tennessee in the Winter Meetings. Players likely to generate interest from other teams include Dexter Fowler. The 26-year-old had an even .300 batting average in 2012. Although the Rockies have said that
they are not willing to trade him, a good offer, particularly for a pitcher in trade could well change their way of thinking.
Michael Cuddyer is another one. The 33-year-old right fielder had a decent year with a .260 batting average and a .317 on-base percentage. The 2013 season will be the second year of Michael’s $31.5 million contract with the Colorado ball club. With his overall
abilities and leadership qualities, he could be a sought after player.
There are some youngsters in the ranks of Colorado that may also have some takers. These include out fielders Charlie Blackmon, Tim Wheeler and Rafael Ortega and the recently acquired infielder from the Arizona Diamondbacks, Ryan Wheeler.
The team can lose some players in the Rule 5 draft. Those who can draw other teams’ interests include Isaiah Froneberger, Parker Frazier and Coty Woods. Coty played for two teams in the Rockies’ Minor League System in 2012.
The Colorado Rockies do not have payroll troubles and the team is expected to have $81 million on the salary sheets on Opening Day. They have a couple of high priced players but with a lot of youngsters amongst their ranks, it evens out well.
Looking at the overall scenario, we may see some changes in the Rockies during the Winter Meetings. It will not be surprising though if little or no change takes place. The team as it stands in good shape and a part from a couple of additions, particularly
in the pitching department, looks set to take on the 2013 season.
