Colorado Rockies hitting spree results in Philadelphia Phillies losing 7-1 - Part 1
Colorado Rockies put on a brilliant display of hitting as they defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 7-1 at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia on Thursday, May 19.
The Phillies should be officially worried now. Last night’s win gave them a break from their season high consecutive four losses but looks like they’re back to losing once again. The Rockies silenced the Phillies with their three home-runs that would have
been hard to chase for any team, let alone the Phillies, whose offence can barely manage to put up runs on the scoreboard.
Jason Giambi was the key player in the game as he belted out seven RBIs that accounted for all the runs that came from the Rockies’ side as they won 7-1 over the National League leading Phillies. The last player who drove in seven or more runs was Albert
Pujols who is more than often termed as the greatest player in baseball. He helped the St. Louis Cardinals to win 8-7 over the New York Mets in August of 2006.
Giambi, who is an American League Most Valuable Player, now has 419 home-runs under his belt which is four more than what Pujols has. This game marked his first three home-run games. What makes this achievement even more special is the fact that unlike Pujols
who has age on his side, Giambi is 40-years-old which may be considered as young by some and not old at all by normal standards, but in baseball you’re expected to decline by the time you hit your late thirties.
The last person who could belt out three back-to-back homers like Giambi at an age like his was Stan Musial. He did it when he was 41-years-old in 1962.
The state of the Phillies’ offence can be judged by the fact that their slugger, Ryan Howard has remained hitless in the last 20 times that he has come out to bat. The Phillies have declined to 1-2-3 in 13 out of their 29 last innings. Since the month of
May started, they’ve scored more than three runs a mere six times and are going 8-9 this month.
The Phillies’ offence seems to spark only for brief moments and cannot keep any consistency to their game. It will be interesting to see how the Rockies carry their winning momentum into their next match-up. The Phillies put in a decent performance, but
it was not nearly enough to contain the Rockies’ offence in the game.
The Phillies heavy reliance on their brilliant pitching line-up is putting pressure on the team. The offence is lacking support to back up their pitching and put much needed runs on the board.
