Colorado Rockies humiliate Kansas City Royals 9-0 – MLB Update
The Colorado Rockies exhibited a perfect example of the right combination as the club disgraced the rivals Kansas City Royals 9-0 in the first fixture of the three-game interleague series, at Coors Field in Denver, on Friday, July 1.
Rockies’ Mark Ellis, who was traded to the club for Bruce Billings and a player yet to be named on June 30, made a splendid start with his three hits including a dazzling two-run homer in the fifth inning. After playing nine years for the Oakland Athletics,
it was really dream start for the Ellis.
"I was a little nervous before the game started," Ellis said, "but everything calmed down after that first ground ball."
Ellis opened his account for the Rockies in the fifth inning with a 415-feet long two-run homer off the Royals’ starter Danny Duffy. He then made another hit but this time for an RBI single off Nate Adcock to record his three runs of a nine-run game.
Besides Ellis, Troy Tulowitzki and Charlie Blackmon also launched homers. Tulowitzki hammered it in the start of the third inning for two runs while Blackmon blistered one-run grand slam in the eighth inning when the Rockies had already posted seven runs.
Ty Wigginton and Todd Helton each made an RBI single. Wigginton’s RBI was a lead-off single in the first inning while Helton struck it in sixth inning.
Rockies’ ace Juan Nicasio threw a stormy eight innings to take four batters without allowing any run over three innings. Allowing just two walks over 111 pitches, Nicasio took his third win of the season and improved his record to 3-1 with 4.10 after seven
starts.
He received full support from his closer Edgmer Escalona, who went for just one run over 20 pitches of his one inning spell with a 0.00 ERA.
On the other hand, the Royals’ employed all three pitchers that went for runs. Starter Duffy gave away five runs on nine hits including two homers and walked one as he lost his third game. He also managed to get six strike-outs.
Despite getting a humiliating defeat, the Royals’ manager Ned Yost used a kind of words for his starter that definitely encourage him and said, "He threw the ball very well, threw his fastball for strikes, got in on us, and kept the ball down. The strike
zone was a tiny strike zone and he did a good job of keeping the ball in it. And he threw more breaking balls for strikes than I thought he would."
Reliever Nate Adcock received three runs on two hits, walked three and struck-out three over two innings while closer Joakim Soria got a one-run homer despite pitching 13 strikes of his 17 pitches.
This loss will force Ned Yost to make some changes in his batting rotation, if he wants his team to remain competitive in the season.
