Colorado Rockies humiliated by St. Louis Cardinals 6-11 – MLB Recap
The Colorado Rockies humiliated by the St. Luis Cardinals 6-11 in the first game of their three match regular series encounter on Tuesday, July 31 at Coors Field in Denver.
Rockies' starting lineup played poor from start of play and looked exhausted on the mound. Combined they allowed eleven runs and plainly lost the game for the Rockies.
Starter Jeff Francis pitched four innings and allowed five runs, six hits and five earned runs. He was also hammered with one home-run on 5.43 ERA.
“A hanging curveball, A couple tough mistakes to some good hitters, put us in a big hole it was tough. Honestly, I felt good all day, But they took advantage of [me leaving the ball up in the zone]. And it put us in a big hole. After the first, I settled. Tried to battle as long as I could," Francis said on his outing and on his team’s performance which were not accurate in that particular game.
“That, in essence, put us back down three runs, They jumped on us pretty good, They're the best offensive club in the league; they keep coming at you. They threw four runs up in the first inning of the game," Rockies' manager Jim Tracy said.
Starter Adam Ottavino pitched 2.2 innings and allowed four runs, four hits and four earned runs on 4.99 ERA.
While relief pitcher Mike Ekstrom was also hammered with two runs, four hits and two earned runs on his 5.91 ERA in just 1.1 innings.
On the other hand, the Cardinals’ pitchers played superbly and won the game for their team. They looked sharp on the mound and pitched with sheer speed and fierceness.
Especially their starter Kyle Lohse pitched very well. Though he allowed some five runs in his six innings spell but he remained his calm with his consistent 2.91 ERA.
Closer Jason Motte could have lost the game for the Cardinals but with his massive Major League experience; he held the Rockies' hitters with enormous power and did not allow any extra runs. He allowed one hit, one run and one earned run on his 2.74 ERA.
