Colorado Rockies looking for stronger pitching unit in 2013 season - MLB News
The Colorado Rockies at the moment are looking for some good pitchers. It is quite a task but one that the Colorado ball club must perform in order to get good results in 2013.
The issue for the Rockies has been complicated with the altitude their ball park is located at. Jeremy Guthrie was traded from the Baltimore Orioles but the usually dependable right-handed pitcher was unable to perform at Coors Field. He was traded midseason
to the Kansas City Royals, giving a solid performance for them. Guthrie was signed by the Royals for a three year deal worth $25 million.
Bill Geivett, the Rockies’ senior vice president of Major League Operations is aware of the team’s need of a solid pitching staff. Bill knows they will need some quality guys in both opening rotation and in the bullpen. The altitude problem has not helped
and most pitchers have been unpredictable with their performance.
"We're looking at predictability and we're not going to worry about what the service time is," Geivett said. "I think you want to look at starting pitching or maybe a guy in the bullpen with a little bit more predictability in terms of performance. That's
how we look at it."
The Colorado Rockies will not have any money issues if they have to go after a free agent. They will be hoping that their top pitchers, Jhoulys Chacin and Jorge De La Rosa will be fit in 2013. The team will likely add another experienced pitcher, which will
reduce the work load of younger, inexperienced pitchers who had to do bulk of the work in 2012 season.
That should be good for the team as that will allow the youngster to learn the trade under less stress. "If we sign a veteran, it'll push some of those guys into competing for the fifth spot. But at the same time those are the guys we're looking to our future
with," Bill Said.
It is yet to be known what will be the final shape of the Colorado Rockies’ pitching unit in 2013. They will like to add some useful names to their opening rotation as well as the bullpen in order to reverse the fortunes of the team. A blend of experience
and youth may just do the trick for them.
