Colorado Rockies lose to Chicago Cubs 3-5 – MLB Recap
The Colorado Rockies lost to Chicago Cubs 3-5 in the first game of their three-match regular series encounter on Friday, August 24 at Wrigley Field in Chicago.
Cubs’ entire roster played aggressive and won in the end. Their pitchers held the Rockies’ upfront offence and never let them play with ease during the entire game.
Starter Jeff Samardzija did well on the mound for seven innings as he allowed only three runs and received six hits on his consistent 4.09 ERA. He struck-out seven Rockies' hitters and proved one of the winning factors for the Cubs.
"There have been times I had good stuff and it's gone smoothly and then I come out early like that and scuffle and really not have fastball command or a slider all game, To get through the end of seven innings felt really good, just felt like a starting pitcher, consciously understanding what's there and not there," Samardzija said on his performance which gave the Cubs a welcome victory in the series.
Later, Cubs’ manager Dale Sveum commented on Samardzija and said, "He was able to settle down, He's grown a lot, especially in the last four, five, six starts. You start seeing a guy who's learning what to do in situations, how to get quicker outs."
Samardzija’s team-mate and closing pitcher Carlos Marmol also played well and pitched the last important inning with complete precision which smoothed his team’s victory. He received only one hit and struck-out one hitter.
On the other hand, the Rockies’ were reluctant to attack which eventually proved disastrous for them as they suffered a humiliating defeat. They fell short with two runs and could not just match the Cubs’ brilliance.
Starter Drew Pomeranz could have played much better but the Cubs’ hitters persistently kept him under pressure.
He pitched five solid innings but gave two runs and received two hits on his 4.78 ERA. He struck-out one and received two homers.
Later relief pitcher Matt Belisle also received some heavy hits as he allowed three runs on three hits. He pitched 0.1 innings while his ERA rose to 3.34.
