Colorado Rockies lose to San Francisco Giants 7-3 at the AT&T Park – MLB News
Tussle at the top of the National League West continues, as the Colorado Rockies went down against the San Francisco Giants 7-3 on Sunday, May 26, 2013 at the AT&T Park in front of a strong 42,000 plus crowd.
The only time in the ballgame when the Rockies went ahead was the first innings when they were able to score two runs, courtesy to an RBI double by Michael Cuddyer. The Giants were able to score a run each in the bottom of the second and fourth innings to get back on even terms.
The Giants piled on more runs as they scored three and two runs respectively in the fifth and the sixth innings to assume complete control of the ballgame.
The Rockies suffered a blow with Michael Cuddyer getting hit on the forearm in the sixth innings. Although there was no fracture, the hitter is finding it hard to hold the bat at the moment and may be placed on the disabled list.
As per what Cuddyer said, the condition is not the best.
"It's swollen, sore, stiff, all that," Cuddyer said.
Matt Cain, the starting pitcher for the Giants, had especially good control and was able to dictate the terms with some fantastic pitching.
Walt Weiss, the Colorado Rockies’ manager, felt that he got his act together in the third where he started throwing the breaking balls that caused all the trouble to his batters.
"He found his breaking ball somewhere along there -- I think about the third inning -- and he was throwing strikes with it," Weiss said.
Giants’ manager, Bruce Bochy, was also pleased by the pitcher’s performance and said that the main aim was to get him through the first five innings.
"That game was all about Matt Cain and him settling down to give us five innings," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.
Jon Garland, who was the losing pitcher for the Rockies, said that it was hard to find positives after a not so good pitching performance that he had. However, he felt that there were some positives at the end of the day for the team.
"It's tough when you put your team down three and you end up losing the game to sit and say that you made strides," Garland said, "but to a certain degree, yeah."
The Rockies’ hitters did blow some chances to score with runners in fielding positions, something that no one can afford to do against a strong opposition such as the Giants.
The Rockies next take Houston Astros, a team that is currently struggling and has not had the best of the seasons the preceding two years either. They will certainly get a chance to win more games if they apply themselves well.
