Colorado Rockies mulling over free agent Daniel Schlereth for bullpen - MLB News
The Colorado Rockies are said to be interested in Daniel Schlereth, a left-handed pitcher who is currently a free agent. Daniel was non-tendered by the Detroit Tigers after his limited services to the team in 2012 due to tendinitis in his throwing shoulder.
The Rockies are in search of a left-handed relief pitcher as they have already traded Matt Reynolds to the Arizona Diamondbacks for infielder Ryan Wheeler. With shortage of left-handed relievers, Daniel appears to be a case of natural selection.
The 26-year-old is expected to start a throwing program soon and is expected to be fit in time for Spring Training. Schlereth was a part of the Arizona Diamondbacks’ bullpen in 2011 and posted a decent 3.49 ERA in 49 games.
So far, Daniel has appeared in four Major League seasons and has presented two ball clubs. He has a 5-6 win-loss record with a 4.35 career ERA in a total of 94 appearances. His best year so far as been the 2010 season, where he posted a 2.89 ERA and had
a 2-0 winning record in 18 games.
The pitcher from Anchorage, Alaska has had previous association with the Denver Area. He graduated from the Highlands Ranch High School in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. Daniel was a star pitcher for his high school and was also the quarterback for the school.
Schlereth’s father Mark was an NFL player for 12 years and played for Denver Broncos as well. He was a lineman for two Super Bowl winning Broncos teams and currently is a member of local media and also ESPN.
Colorado ball club has a couple of other options as well. These include freshly non-tendered by the Washington Nationals’ Tom Gorzelanny as well as Jair Jurrjens whom the Rockies tried to acquire from the Atlanta Braves last year as well.
The Colorado Rockies can certainly benefit from good left-handed relievers. The team is in need of a good bullpen to be able to shut down the scoring towards the end of the game. The team has had a major struggle recently and a well performing bullpen will
certainly help them get out of trouble in 2013.
