Colorado Rockies outclass St. Louis Cardinals 2-8 to avoid sweep – MLB Update
Colorado Rockies put up a fine performance at Coors Field in Denver, Colorado on Thursday, August 2 as they outclassed the defending World Series champions St. Louis Cardinals 8-2 in the finale of a three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular
season.
Third baseman Jordan Pacheco provided the Rockies with a decent start as he double do right in the fourth to break the deadlock. Left fielder Carlos Gonzalez scored to put the Rockies on the board.
Pacheco continued to make the most of available opportunities home-plate, hitting a sacrifice fly to centre in the sixth. Shortstop Josh Rutledge homered to left in the seventh and catcher Ramon Hernandez doubled to deep right in the eighth to give Colorado
complete control of the situation.
"I can't think of any time where I've hit a home run in four straight games before," Rutledge said. "That's a first. I'm just getting some good pitches to hit, and trying not to overswing and just let my hands work."
"It was huge," he added. "We all know how close we are to being a great team, and having Whitey go out there and give us the start that he did gives us so much confidence. We knew from the beginning, the way he was throwing, that we had a good shot of winning
the game."
Starting pitcher Alex White produced a match winning performance as he gave up just two runs and five hits in just over five innings. Reliever Rex Brothers pitched scoreless 1.2 innings for his sixth win of the season.
Cardinals will be disappointed to miss out on a great opportunity to complete an emphatic series sweep. Dominating the Rockies in almost all aspects of the game, St. Louis secured a comfortable 11-6 win in series opener.
They continued their excellent work in Game 2 of the series as well for a 9-6 win. Credit goes to Colorado who were determined to turn things around on Thursday and it will be interesting to see if they can end the season on a positive note to salvage some
of their lost pride.
