Colorado Rockies pick Washington Nationals’ pitcher Daniel Rosenbaum in Rule 5 Draft - MLB News
The Colorado Rockies selected the Washington Nationals Daniel Rosenbaum in the Rule 5 Draft on Thursday. Daniel will be fighting it out for an opening rotation spot for the 2013 season in the Rockies.
Rosenbaum was drafted by the Washington Nationals in 2009 Amateur Draft in the 22nd round out of the Xavier University. He spent his 2012 season with the Harrisburg Senators, the Double-A associates of the Washington Nationals.
Bill Geivett, the senior vice president of Major League operations for the Colorado Rockies welcomed the move and said that he was on the radar for a while now. "Our scouts have really liked him -- he throws strikes and he's good at getting ground balls,"
Geivett said. "He's definitely a good competitor, a good strike thrower that can change speeds, a guy we've had our eye on for a while."
He was also quite clear as to what role the club wants Daniel to play in the 2013 season. The Rockies want him to be a part of the team and take a spot on the opening rotation. "My question to my scouts was, 'Can he come in and compete for a job?' They said,
'Yes.' We're not taking him as some clubs will do, take a Rule 5 player, and hold him for a year at the big league level. We're going to try and see if he can help our Major League club."
The ball club in the longer run looks at Daniel as a potential bullpen prospect. The Rockies are also interested in Daniel Schlereth, who became a free agent after the Detroit Tigers non-tendered him. Josh Outman is another pitcher who will be competing
for a starting rotation spot in 2013 but is likely to be a relief pitcher in the long haul.
Daniel Rosenbaum had an 8-10 win-loss record during the 2012 season with Harrisburg Senators, posing a 3.94 ERA in 155 innings that he pitched in. He had started out with an amazing 0.62 ERA with a 5-0 record in his first eight starts but later was unable
to carry the farm, partly due to injury.
He gave his best performance in 2011 season. Playing for Class-A Potomac and Double-A Harrisburg, he posted combined 2.52 ERA in 26 games with a 9-6 winning record.
Colorado Rockies lost Coty Woods, a right-handed pitcher to Texas Rangers in the Rule 5 Draft. In 2012, he played for the Double-A Tulsa Drillers and the Triple-A Colorado Springs Sky Sox, posting a combined 4-4 record as a reliever with a 3.20 ERA in 61
appearances.
The Rockies have picked an able pitcher from the Rule 5 Draft and will want him to perform well in the Majors. They have a defined role for the 25-year-old and that can be useful for both the player and the club in the time to come.
