Colorado Rockies pick sign top Amateur Draft pick Jonathan Gray - MLB Update
Colorado Rockies were able to seal the deal with their no.1 pick at the MLB Amateur Draft Jonathan Gray. The terms and conditions of the deal are not yet known but it is reported by the Denver Post that the signing
bonus was set at $4.8 million.
The 21-year-old from University of Oklahoma was present at the Coors Field for the press conference in which the signing was announced. He was the third overall pick from the Amateur Draft.
Gray said that he has come across information that the Coors Field is not a pitcher friendly ballpark. He is confident that he can tackle that issue once he earns his stripes through the ranks.
"I hear the ball flies here," Gray said at the news conference`. "It's not a pitcher-friendly ballpark, but that's something I'll learn to overcome. As I work through the system, I'll be able to do that."
Some experts believe that he will be on the fast track to the Major League Baseball and the Colorado Rockies will not take too much time before throwing him in the mix of the big league. However, how early that
will happen is any one’s guess.
The pitcher said that the finalisation of the matters was not all that easy and a lot of considerations had to be taken into account. However, for now, he is concentrated on playing ball and is not bothered about
the whole signing process.
"It was pretty tough -- there were a lot of things going on at that time, but you've got to forget about it and just go out and play your game," Gray said.
The Colorado Rockies have done quite well this far in the professional circuit and are serious contenders for the post-season as well. The pitching has been quite good also. However, it was not the same last
season as the team suffered a lot in the previous season, particularly in the pitching department.
It is quite obvious that the Colorado Rockies are looking to add some good arms to the organisation for the future. It is certainly an investment that is worthwhile and should pay well in the longer run.
