Colorado Rockies roster changes: 4 claimed off waivers, 3 from DL, De La Rosa exercises option
Like a number of Major League teams, Colorado Rockies are also having several changes on their roster. Those claimed of outright waivers by other teams included pitchers Zach Putnam, Guillermo Moscoso, Josh Roenicke and infielder Tommy Field. Pitcher Carlos
Torres was out righted off the Major League roster. Currently their 40-man roster stands at 37.
Right-handed pitchers Juan Nicasio, Christian Friedrich and Todd Helton were reinstated from the 60-day disabled list. Juan pitched in 11 games at the start of the season before getting his left knee injured fielding a ground ball in early June. The Dominican
had to go through arthroscopic surgery and was unable to play for the rest of the season. In the 11 games that he pitched, he had a 2-3 win-loss record and a 5.28 ERA.
Christian made his Major League against the San Diego Padres in May of 2012. The 25-year-old pitcher made 16 starts, with a 5-8 win-loss record and a 6.17 ERA. Stress fracture in his lower back revealed by an MRI in early August brought his season to a close.
The Rockies bought Josh Sullivan’s contract to make sure he does not become a free agent. The right-handed pitcher was drafted by the Rockies in 2005. The 28-year-old has yet to make his Major League debut.
First Baseman Todd Helton missed the later part of the season. The 39-year-old played 69 games in 2012 with an average of .238, going long 7 times and managing 37 RBI’s. Todd has played for the Rockies for 16 seasons now. It is also the only team he has
represented in the Major League.
Left-handed Pitcher Jorge De La Rosa will also be making a return to the Rockies after an injury layoff. He exercised his $11 million player option for 2013. The 31-year-old sat out most of the 2012 season due to a tear in a ligament in the left elbow.
Prior to the injury that required surgery. De La Rosa had a 4-0 win-loss record. His return at the end of the season was not impressive but his fitness was obviously more important than his numbers at this point. The player is confident that he will be fully
fit in time for Spring Training.
Moscoso, who had a .612 ERA in 23 games with a 3-2 win-loss record, was claimed by Kansas City Royals. The 2012 regular season was the pitcher’s first stint with the Rockies. Field and Roenicke were claimed by the Minnesota Twins. Tommy Field only had a
couple of at-bats in all of 2012 and did not hit a single ball. He played in the Major League with the Rockies for two seasons.
For Josh, this was his second season for the Rockies. The pitcher originally from Baltimore pitched in 63 games, with a 3.25 ERA and a 4-2 win-loss record. Overall, this was the fourth season in the Major League for the 30-year-old pitcher.
Torres had a 5-3 win-loss record in 2012 with a 5.26 ERA. He pitched in a total of 31 games in 2012 season. The pitcher from Santa Cruz, California had inked a deal with the Rockies in December 2011.
It will be interesting to see the final shape of the 40-man roster for the Rockies. There is some chopping and changing going on, which is the case for most teams at the moment. The club has yet to finalise their manager as well.
