Colorado Rockies show resurgence with clean sweep at home against San Diego Padres - MLB

The Colorado Rockies have started the 2013 season with a bang and the team now sits on a five game winning streak after winning the series against the San Diego Padres 3-0 at Coors Field on Sunday, April 7.
The team appears to be totally different from the one that played in 2012 season, posting its worst 64-98 result in the brief history of the Colorado ballclub.
The Rockies posted a 9-1 win against the Padres on Sunday, stamping their authority on the opponents. Manager Walt Weiss, who is managing a Major League team for the first time, is quite happy with the way things have been so far.
"It's nice to get off to a good start," Weiss said.
Walt also believes that the previous season was a tough one and the team has left it in the past and is looking forward to the challenge at hand. He feels that the level of confidence within the team is quite high.
He said, "Last year was a tough year. It's nice to put some of those demons behind us right away. We felt all spring like we have a good club. A lot of people may not have felt the same way on the outside, but we're very confident in the fact that we have
a good club.”
Centre fielder Dexter Fowler continued his good work and smacked two extra base hits including a home-run into the opposing bullpen. This was his fourth long ball in the six games the Colorado ballclub has so far played.
The pitching unit did well too and Jhoulys Chacin made another excellent start as he surrendered only a single run in nearly seven innings. He has thus far posted a 1.35 ERA in two games.
The important factor has been Chacin getting a lot of ground-outs at Coors Field where fly balls can carry all the way because of the altitude of the ballpark.
On the other hand, Edinson Volquez, the starting pitcher for the Padres got a rough end of the deal and gave away three runs in the first innings before surrendering just one more.
San Diego manager Bud Black understands that the Rockies targeted the opening pitcher from the word go and were successful.
"They jumped on some pitches early," Bud Black said. "Volky hung in there and only gave up one run after the first."
The start to the season for the Colorado Rockies is a good one and it seems that work put in by Walt Weiss and his mostly newly appointed coaches is paying off rather well.
It is crucial that the team does not lose focus and continues to produce the good results and improve upon the poor show they presented in the last season.
