Colorado Rockies smash New York Mets 11-3 in sub-zero temperature - MLB Update
It’s not winter but try telling that to the folks in Denver who had to brave 28 degree weather to be able to play baseball. This is the lowest temperature that the Rockies have played in at home.
The game had nothing cold about it as the Rockies smashed their way through to an emphatic 11-3 victory against the New York Mets at the Coors Field on April 18, 2013. The Rockies now have an 11-4 record and the 64-98 record last year appears to have been
something of an adage.
Jon Garland, who recorded his second win of the season as a starting pitcher, was surprised with the amount of cold there was. There had been snow a day or so back.
“I was surprised at how fast my hand got cold, because it didn't seem that cold there with the sun," Garland said.
He was pleased by the fact that the offensive production by his team was going so good which takes the pressure of the pitchers as well. He sees the mutual trust that the hitters have in each other as the reason behind their success.
"You can see the trust they have in the guy behind them," Garland said.
Manager Walt Weiss is quite pleased with the way his team has thus far performed. He sees that the team has been scoring runs quite well and particularly in the latter part of the game. Similar scenario took place on Thursday as the team scored six runs
in the seventh and another two in the eighth to seal the game.
Coors Field has some extra advantage for the hitters as the air is thin in the mile high ball park and the balls travel farther than normal conditions.
Walt is confident of his boys and feels they get better as the game progresses. Walt believes that either you pitch right to these guys or the ball will end up amongst the crowds.
"The thing I like about this lineup is we've scored a lot of runs late," Rockies’ manager Walt Weiss said. "The game is close, and then it seems like seventh, eighth or ninth, we've been putting crooked numbers up there and putting some games away. It's
just tough for a pitcher to make quality pitches throughout the lineup. If they don't, there's a possibility the ball will end up in the seats."
There has been a marked improvement thus far in the performance of the Rockies. They seem to be feeling good and enjoying the game. The change in the management of the team also seems to have played a positive role.
The fans will be hoping that the current performance can continue throughout the season. Should they continue play like this, they can surely spring a few surprises.
