Colorado Rockies wait on Michael Young situation
The Colorado Rockies are interested in Michael Young, but not with the heavy price tag that comes with him.
The Texas Rangers are punching up great offers for their veteran player but the Rockies have a limit on their expenses and ability to pay out in the form of prospects. A trade deal is unlikely to materialise if the two teams do not make a compromise.
Young has a salary package owed to him and the total worth of that pay cheque is $48 million. The Rockies are keen to bring on the slugger but they also require the Rangers to pay off most of the tab on the bill. The Texan club, on the other hand, won’t
pay off the cheque for the Rockies if they’re not offered the right number of prospects for the deal. There is a standoff.
The Rockies are not the only club to show interest in the veteran. The Los Angeles Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies also inquired on Young, but both seem to be cost-conscious.
Michael Young has a partial no-trade clause that only allows him to be traded to 8 teams in total, although he has indicated he will consider a trade to other clubs as well. In any case, time is running out with spring training fast approaching. Sunday,
20 February, 2011 can be termed a deadline for any possible trade.
“Ideally, yeah, if there is a trade, it will most likely be before that point,” Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said, “I'm not setting any deadlines though. We'll walk down the path and see if there is something that satisfies all parties.”
“But we put the club together with the idea of Michael playing a key role, and we're still prepared for that.”
The Rockies are testing the Rangers and a source in the press has said that the interest is still there. The club will likely make its intention clear when a few more days pass, as the relationship between the Rangers and Young will be tested to derive a
value for the deal.
