Question:

Colored colostrum, could I have an infection?

I started leaking colostrum about 2 weeks ago, and now my one breast is sore. (Kind of like your first few weeks of nursing a new born). When I expressed from that side, one of the ducts let out some colostrum that was a rusty color, but still watery. Could this be blood? Is it too early to have some sort of infection? With my first pregnancy, I only over noticed it to be clear or milky white.

  1. Unfortunately its never too early to have an infection.  Call your doctor if you think it looks bloody.  Make sure your doctor (or nurse) is pro-breastfeeding because, believe it or not, there are a lot out there that won't be supportive and will just tell you to wean rather than let on that they don't know much about it.

  2. Yes, it very well could be.  I had an infection prior to my 2nd pregnancy and had the same symptoms you just described.  I also found out I have fibrocystic b*****s but I'm not sure if the 2 were related.  I would get it checked out to be safe but it shouldn't effect breast feeding at all.

  3. It should be slightly yellow or white, you should talk to your doctor
