Colored contacts : I have dark brown eyes, if I get colored contacts...?

...would the color of the contacts just show up the color they are, or would they blend in with my eye color and appear a different color? Because I just want to get the color I want my eyes to be, and I just read this question about contacts, which confused me extremely. Help?
