  1. no, you don't need an exam, though you may want to get one so that you can see if you're eyes like contacts.  If you get them from Sam's Club/Costco, they cost about $18-$25 a box so total is double those prices b/c you need a left and a right box.

  2. In the United States, it is illegal to sell contacts with a current RX for them, even if it's just for color and with no prescription. You do need to get your eyes checked, if you have insurance, they may help cover the exam. There are different curvatures to contacts and if they don't fit right, they can do extreme damage to your eyes. Also, how do you know what color you want, how to put them in and take them out, and how the color will look on your eye. Your doctor will teach you how to put them in and take them out as well as let you try on different colors so you can decide what color you want. The contacts themselves are pretty cheap, ranging from about $25-$40 a 6 pack (3 pairs). Each pair is designed to last 2 weeks, but listen to your Dr. because there are many different factors that go into how long contacts should last for you (example: allergies, protein build up, dry eyes).

  3. you should go with your eyes

You would need to be getting an eye exam before you would place something like a colored contact directly into your eye.

Contacts need to be fitted to the curvature of your eye.

I usually find that colored contacts look fake & unattractive, but thats just my opinion. Most of the time people's eye color are perfect for their face & skin coloring.
