Coloring melted sugar?

Question

For a class project, i'm supposed to make a pool, and was told melting sugar would be best, as it hardens. Every time i melt down the sugar and add the blue food coloring, the melted sugar turns green. Is there a way for me to get it to melt clear instead of that yellow brown color, or does it have to do with the color?

 it might help to try using blue candy to begin with. try blue jolly ranchers or rock candy
