Question:

Colour schemes for my new flat?

I'm in the process of buying a newly rennovated flat. Currently the walls are white as the developer is waiting for my decision on the colour scheme for the 2 main rooms. The only completed area is the bathroom - white suite, luxury shower cabinet with beige and brown tiles throughout.

Throughout the flat the floors, skirting, door frames and doors are all a deep mahogony/cocoa colour (I had no choice in this but it looks good), the ceilings are high and the windows are also new (white, plastic). I have views from all the windows across fields to gentle hills and forestry, it's a quiet, rural area at the end of a village.

The main living room is around 25m squared with 2 large east-facing windows that let in a lot of light, the sun is that side of the apartment in the morning only so it needs to be a fairly light colour as it won't get direct sunlight most of the day, and my existing furniture (which I don't really need to change) is neutral colours - wheat background with gold and darker brown patterns. Part of this room will be the kitchen as there is an alcove set aside so the whole space feels more open - it's a big airy place :)

The second room, which will be the bedroom, is around 20m squared with huge west-facing balcony doors that let in a lot of light from mid afternoon to sunset, I intend to set aside a reading corner near the doors to maximise the light and make the most of the view. When I visited last week this room had a greyness that I'd like to warm up by changing the white walls. The colour of the existing furnture is irrelevant as I intend to keep this room as empty as possible with just the bed and minimal storage as I don't have a huge amount of clothes. I'm looking for a calm, restful colour.

I don't need links to colour swatches, I'd just like some good advice about matching the walls in those 2 rooms to suit the existing furniture, light and function of the spaces. I'm open to holistic and theraputic approaches - feng shui or other styles.

Any budding interior designers out there, please help :)

  1. when re-decorating home, bedroom or any other room, always try to choose colors according to feng shui. in this case you will activate powers of 5 elements (water, earth, metal, wood and fire) and support all your lucky "areas" - this will attract love, romance, wealth, money, prosperity, luck etc etc

  2. Color choices for rooms is a very personal thing because YOU have to live there. So I always recommend people go to a paint store and look at borders and wallpapers to give them some sense of colors and color combinations they like. I appreciate all the information about your place, but what you really needed to tell us is what kinds of colors YOU like, warm earth tones (sand and sage), hot colors (reds, orange), or cool colors (blue). The kitchen and living rooms because they are close to one another should have contrasting but complimentary colors.

  3. If you want to apply Feng Shui to choose the colours of your new flat, you should use the Flying Star system of Feng Shui to be sure of which colour is appropriate in each of the sectors according to the elements. You can find all information about it as well as a calculator here:
