Colt McCoy inquiry: NFLPA representatives visit Cleveland to inspect Browns facilities – NFL News
A joint review of handing of Colt McCoy head injury being conducted by the National Football League (NFL) and NFL Players Association (NFLPA) was extended on Tuesday with a visit of NFLPA representatives to the Cleveland to further
investigate the issue.
The representatives were reported to have been sent by NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith to meet medical and coaching staff of the Browns.
The collective bargaining agreement (CBA) allows the players union to make unannounced visits to a team’s office to inspect health and safety facilities and protocols.
Browns medical staff and coach have come under fire over handling of Colt McCoy’s concussion especially their permission to him to return and play the game. An initial inquiry had found that the player was let go back without proper
testing by Browns medical staff.
The latest reports indicated that NFL and NFLPA representatives will hold a review meeting with the Browns on Tuesday to further determine course of their inquiry before reaching to a conclusion. NFL would be represented by Dr
Elliott Pellman and NFLPA by Dr Thom Mayer.
Reports further said that there was a difference of opinion between the NFLPA executive committee and Browns players over the issue that how the players association should proceed with its review.
Browns player Scott Fujita who is on the committee as a member has openly expressed the need for posting of independent neurologists on the sideline during each game to monitor concussions.
"I believe our training staff has been ahead of the curve on this issue," Fujita told AP in an email. "There are leaguewide problems in procedure, and that's what needs to be addressed. You can't point your finger at any one thing.
It's the process. We need to continue to strive to find better ways to take care of our players, and I think an independent neurologist on game days is something that should be seriously considered."
However Charlie Batch another member of committee and the teammate of James Harrison who was involved in helmet-to-helmet to Browns Colts McCoy is silent on the issue.
McCoy suffered head injury in Browns game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The issue of handling of his injury has drawn a severe criticism of the Browns and NFL has announced to conduct a thorough review of the issue.
Initial findings have pointed out at a system failure at Browns; however, the investigations continued.
