Colt McCoy or Brandon Weeden: No favours from Cleveland Browns defence in QBs competition – NFL News
Cleveland Browns’ defence is said to be fine with receiving throws from any of their quarterbacks, showing no preference or mercy whether they have rookie Brandon Weeden or incumbent Colt McCoy at the opposite end.
Both QBs were handed down the task of throwing interceptions on past Sunday, which the defence received without any discrimination. Defensive back Sheldon Brown said of the situation:
"We're going for the football no matter who you are. That's one of our goals this year. Stop a team, take the ball from them and give our offense good field position."
He added:
“These are challengeable throws. It's tight (coverage). You saw them seeing what they can get away with. You can't just look at raw plays; you take that (into account)."
Coach Pat Shurmur who watched the players taking on each other as a silent spectator said he enjoyed the time out while watching them play. He said:
"My favourite day of the year, other than game day of course, is the first day of pads, and I wasn't disappointed. I thought there was good banging out there."
It was the first-ever real challenge for Weeden, who is being seen as the new starter for the team this season. The QB admitted to have made some mistakes, which he claimed he has never done in the past. Nevertheless, he remains confident that in a matter
of time he will get used to the defensive players.
Brandon said:
"I made some mistakes I usually don't make.”
There was not much said by the incumbent in spite of the fact that he is still very much into the competition.
Irrespective of some reports that have laid the claims that the rookie has impressed the onlookers, Browns are to confirm their starter officially yet. The final announcement can be expected at the end of training camp.
It can be moved forward if the team trades McCoy to some other team in the league, as is being speculated since drafting of Weeden by them in April this year.
