Colts’ Sanders may be done for the season
Bob Sanders just can’t seem to catch a break. The star safety of the Indianapolis Colts suffered a biceps injury on opening day against the Houston Texans and may be out for the season if it is a tear. So far, no word has been given on the severity of his
injury, as he will visit with Dr. James Andrews this week.
"There's definitely several different routes that he can go," team owner Jim Irsay said. "But it's way too early to say that he's definitely done for the season."
Sanders has already missed a lot of action the past two seasons and in his big return, he was injured on the defence’s first series. Sanders went up in the air to defend a pass and fell awkwardly on his right arm. While the injury is feared to be a tear,
the Colts have been mum on his status.
"I really can't confirm that one way or the other, and I don't want to speak until we have all the information," Irsay said when asked if it was a tear. "It would be misleading to do anything different than that right now, but he will get a second opinion,
and we'll have something from there."
Sanders has proven to be a great player when he s healthy, but that has been rare. He impressed in 2007 especially when he was an All-Pro safety and managed to stay healthy most of the season. In 15 starts, Sanders recorded 3.5 sacks, two interceptions and
71 tackles.
Sanders was rewarded with a big contract, signing a five-year $37.5 million deal with $20 million guaranteed. Since then, Sanders has started in just nine games over two seasons. He has missed 49 games in a career totaling 97 games. Perhaps no other player
in the NFL has had worse luck with injuries.
The Colts moved Melvin Bullitt to play in Sanders’ place last season and Bullitt filled in nicely. Bullitt has started in 27 of 32 games the last two seasons and was a key contributor to the Colts’ Super Bowl run last year. With Bullitt able to fill the
role and Sanders so injury-prone, you have to wonder if the Colts will have to move on if Sanders is forced to miss the season.
