Columbus Blue Jackets' GM Scott Howson still stuck in Rick Nash trade situation -NHL offseason Update
Rick Nash is the hottest player up for grabs this National Hockey League (NHL) offseason but according to Columbus Blue Jackets’ general manager, Scott Howson, there still has not been any significant progress in the players situation.
Howson was reported to have met Nash’s agent on Thursday, June 21, 2012, but it was learned that they were still unable to work anything out. Obviously, Howson is of the favour of keeping the face of his organisation on the squad but being traded his something
Nash has demanded since the start of the 2011-2012 regular season.
"I think a lot of things can happen between now and when the draft is over," Howson said. "I'm not counting on anything. Obviously our goal is to do what's best for our hockey club, and that's how we'll keep operating."
A trade is something that Howson is unable to deny and with the free agency deadline fast approaching, teams are beginning to pour in from left and right in order to grab exclusive negotiating rights before anyone else does.
"I think anything's possible in this game," he said. "No one knows how people are going to feel a week from now or two weeks from now, or how we're going to feel. Rick's a great guy; he's been a tremendous ambassador for our team and for our city. I wouldn't
want to put any certainty into anything right now."
Nash was drafted as the first overall pick by Columbus Blue Jackets back in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft and signing on to a mammoth eight year, $62.4 million contract prior to the previous season.
For Columbus, trading Nash would definitely free up a huge amount in their salary cap space, but at the same time, they would be letting go of their best player and captain.
Rick Nash was not entirely up for leaving Columbus until he finally realised that there is no career progress with the Blue Jackets. Obviously each and every player dreams of winning a Stanley Cup at one point and with Columbus, he just does not see that
happening anytime soon.
