Columbus Blue Jackets asking for the sky for Rick Nash -NHL Free Agency Update
Rick Nash wanting out of the Columbus Blue Jackets is nothing new but whether or not general manager, Scott Howson, gets what he wants is the actual question. Giving up a solid player like Nash will require something hefty in return and for Howson, the sky is the limit.
For a majority of the teams around the National Hockey League (NHL), the only thing stopping them from grabbing the player right away is his huge, eight-year, $62.4 million contract and for some of the bigger teams, that amount is just too huge to sacrifice.
“Scott is trying to rob somebody, and he has that right,” said Michael Peca, a former NHL player, and analyst TSN, a Canadian sports channel. “And you know some teams are trying to get Nash from (Howson) without giving up anything of consequence.”
For the city of Columbus, Ohio, Rick Nash is the face of pro sports, since there are no other professional teams to look forward to, so getting a top class player that came become the face of their organisation is something Scott Howson is bent towards doing.
Rick Nash was picked up as the first overall back in 2002 by Columbus Blue Jackets. He has been on the roster for nine straight seasons now with a total of 674 games played and 547 points (289 goals, 258 assists) and 568 minutes in penalty time.
But for Nash, this is not anything personal but rather something he thinks of to be better for himself and ultimately for the struggling organisation, according to the Columbus Dispatch,
"I was informed by management that there was a rebuild, a reshape, in the team and I personally felt I could be a huge part of that toward bringing assets in," Nash said. "In my view, that was the best thing for the team, the organization, and personally for my career."
Nash had 30 goals and 29 assists last season, proving that he is definitely a top class player but as the Blue Jackets continued to end last in the league, the veteran forward has no other option but to try something else.
The Rick Nash issue could take a month or even more to resolve.
