Columbus Blue Jackets comeback with 3-2 shootout victory over Montreal Canadiens -NHL Update
After a disappointing, 6-3, loss against the Edmonton Oilers, Columbus was determined to get back on track to finally winning some games as they are still ranked as the lowest team in the National Hockey League (NHL) and did so by a comeback victory over
the Montreal Canadiens, 3-2, in a shootout decider on Tuesday night, December 6, 2011, at the sold-out Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
Columbus has finally ended their four-game road trip and will now be returning home for the next five straight. They won two out of the four, which gave them a little boost in regards that they now know that they are able to win games if the teams just focuses
on doing so.
"I thought this was a pretty good trip, we did some good things in some tough buildings," Columbus coach, Scott, Arniel, said. "Coming in here to a tough building as well, to get that two (points) is big. We're going home with a split with five games at
home against five tough opponents. December has to be a good month for us, we need to make hay. Starting tonight was a good first step."
Vaclav Prospal gave the Blue Jackets their go ahead goal in the opening two minutes of the first period. It was answered by Montreal’s, Andrei Kostitsyn, with two seconds remaining in the period for his eighth of the 2011-2012 NHL regular season to level
the match.
R.J. Umberger added his fourth a little over midway through the second 20 minute round in which both teams failed to capitalise on a number of power play opportunities given by each other for various penalties.
With two minutes remaining to go in regulation until the final buzzer sounded, Montreal luckily managed to level the game with Brian Gionta getting his eighth of the regular season to force overtime, which was fruitless and resulted in a shootout extension.
Columbus’ captain, Rick Nash, came out strong once again in the shootout and scored the only goal through Carey Price while Montreal failed on their third straight to tie it and lost their second contest in the past three.
The Blue Jackets are up against the Nashville Predators on Thursday at home while Montreal has the next against Vancouver Canucks on the same day.
