Columbus Blue Jackets lose momentum fall to Buffalo Sabres 4-2 -NHL Match Update
Coming out of their first win of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season, the Columbus Blue Jackets could not maintain the momentum gained against Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday and lost to the Buffalo Sabres, 4-2, Thursday night at the sold-out
First Niagara Center in Buffalo, New York, United States.
A number of fights broke out in the opening period as Cody Bass, Patrick Kaleta and Cody McCormick were served with multiple penalties for fighting and roughing each other up.
Columbus’ 24-year-old centre, Cody Bass, exchanged fists with Buffalo’s, Patrick Kaleta, a little before midway through the first and once again was involved in a fight with Cody McCormick again in the final seconds, which had both players off the ice entering
the second.
The Blue Jackets outshot the Sabres nearly in double figures by taking 43 shots on the home teams’ net, but Jhonas Enroth was in blocking mode tonight as he diverted 41 of those shots only allowing two throughout the 60 minute contest.
"Even for us, when we shoot on him in practice he's not the typical butterfly goalie we're used to seeing, but he reads the play so well and gets the job done", Thomas Pominville said. "I don't care how you make a save, as long as it's not in the net".
Blue Jackets defenseman, James Wisniewski, who made a comeback in their previous matchup against Detroit after facing an eight game suspension during the preseason, blamed their loss on making the same mistakes over and over again.
"We can't buy a break", defenseman James Wisniewski said. "If we cut down the number of mistakes, we are going to win more than we lose. We make three mistakes tonight and the puck's in the back of the net".
Brad Boyes scored his second of the season with less than six minutes remaining in the first while Jason Pominville extended the lead early into the second.
Vaclav Prospal put Columbus within reach by one while Fedor Tyutin made the equaliser midway through the final period, giving the impression either Columbus would win or the match would enter into overtime.
Patrick Kaleta came out and scored the tie-breaker four minutes later while Pominville added his second of the night at the 17:36 mark to secure the contest on a power play opportunity.
Sabres will play their last match of the month against Florida Panthers on Saturday, while Columbus has two more to go, back-to-back against Chicago Blackhawks and Anaheim Ducks.
