Columbus Blue Jackets overtake Anaheim Ducks 3-2 in Overtime -NHL Update
Columbus and Anaheim have both been struggling so far in the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season, but the Blue Jackets showed some skill as they forced the game into overtime and overtook the Ducks, 3-2, on Friday night, February 3, 2012,
at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, United States.
Blue Jackets sit in the lowest position not only in the Western Conference but in the league rankings as well with a disappointing 13-32-6 record and 32 points while every other team is at least 45 points and above.
Anaheim on the other hand is number 13 in the West with 45 points, tied with 14th place Edmonton Oilers.
"It feels good, especially after what happened in the last game," said Columbus’ Derick Brassard, who made the unassisted game-winner in overtime. "We worked really hard. It's always tough on the West Coast, facing good teams, but we just stuck with it.
... We don't have a lot of points in the standings, but all the guys still paid the price and worked hard. We faced a team fighting for the playoffs and made it hard on them."
Teemu Selanne put Anaheim ahead by one early in the opening period for his 17th goal of the season, which was followed by Derick Brassard in the second period with less than six minutes remaining.
Selanne added his second of the night nearly two minutes later to get the tie-breaker on a power play opportunity with Columbus playing with Brassard, who served their penalty for too many men on the ice.
Former Philadelphia Flyers forward, Jeff Carter, levelled the contest at the 2:05 mark of the third on a power play to force the uncertain overtime extension, which due to Brassard’s quick thinking, gave them the match.
Columbus Blue Jackets managed to snap their six-game losing streak and hope to continue winning as they face-off with the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday as they now return home for the next two matchups.
Anaheim Ducks are on a two-game slump and have a chance to get back into action when they host Calgary Flames on Monday.
