Columbus Blue Jackets re-sign Fedor Tyutin to six-year, $27 million extension -NHL offseason Update
Columbus Blue Jackets retained their defensive depth by extending the contract of veteran defender, Fedor Tyutin, to a six-year, $27 million extension on Wednesday, August 31, 2011, a deal which will keep him well through the 2017-2018 season.
The contract signing comes a year before his previous four-year deal worth an estimated $11.375 million was set to expire, which would have made him an unrestricted free agent in July of 2012.
Tyutin struck gold by signing the deal which will now raise his annual salary cap hit from $2.8 million to nearly half as much more with $4.5 million.
Columbus Blue Jackets general manager, Scott Howson, made the announcement via social networking website, Twitter, that his team had made the signing official.
"Pleased to announce 6 year extension for Fedor Tyutin", Howson wrote Wednesday on Twitter. "Fedor has been our top d-man since we traded for him. He signed the deal this morning".
Picked as the 40th overall selection during round-two of the 2001 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft by New York Rangers, the Izhevsk, Russia native, appeared in four regular seasons with his original draft team a recorded a high of 25 points
(6 goals, 19 assists) in 77 games played. It was downhill for the defenseman after that which resulted in him being left as a free agent and signed on with Columbus, where he reached new heights in his career.
In his first season with Blue Jackets, Tyutin potted an impressive 34 points (9 goals, 25 assists) and continued scoring double figures ever since. Last season, the Russian player played 80 games and managed to put up 27 points (7 goals, 20 assists) along
with participating with Team Russia in the Ice Hockey World Championships.
When reached for his views on the deal, Tyutin expressed his satisfaction and regarded Blue Jackets as the team he wanted to play for.
“Columbus is where I want to be”, Tyutin said. “It’s been three years here, and it’s a very good place for me. Good city. Good place for my family. But it’s more than that. You hear about the moves from this summer and you see what management is thinking.
You see where this team is going to go”.
Now with a six-year extension, Fedor Tyutin can focus on improving himself even further and take his team along with him.
