Columbus Blue Jackets snap Nashville Predators winning streak in 4-3 shootout victory -NHL Update
Nashville was looking to win more than two matchups in a row entering their contest against Columbus but were disappointed as James Wisniewski scored the deciding goal in overtime to snap the Predators two game winning streak and end the Blue Jackets drought,
4-3, on Saturday night, November 19, 2011, at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee, United States.
Jordin Tootoo and Derek Dorsett exchanged fists right after the first face off, only three seconds into the opening period followed by another fight between Brian McGrattan and Jared Boll. All players were booked for fighting with a major penalty.
Colin Wilson took advantage of one of many power play opportunity’s during the first period and potted the nights first for Nashville, allowing them to take the lead with less than two minutes to play.
Jeff Carter answered back for the Blue Jackets during the opening minutes of the second period for his first of the 2011-2012 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season ever since he was traded by the Philadelphia Flyers over the offseason.
“We heard it for too long about how long it’s been since we’d won here,” Jackets coach Scott Arniel said. “It was obviously a nail-biter, but what a relief when that goal (by Wisniewski) went in there at the end.”
Mike Fisher brought the Nashville Predators right back up during their only added man advantage of the second period as Columbus’ lost Ryan Johansen midway through for hooking.
Vaclav Prospal made the equaliser for Columbus at the 12:29 mark during a power play chance of their own with Nashville down a player as Francis Bouillon was penalised for delaying the game.
R.J. Umberger made the tie-breaker early in the third and final period of regulation on another added man advantage, which gave more than enough time to both teams to take control and that is what Nashville did as Nick Spaling scored and forced an uncertain
overtime extension.
James Wisniewski’s first of the season proved to be a game-winner by scoring midway through overtime, giving Columbus their first victory in three matchups.
"It went straight in, he didn't really move that much," Wisniewski said. "I'm guessing, being the goaltender that he is, he probably got screened, luckily enough for me."
