Question:

Combining running with strength training?

Does anyone have any tips for staying motivated while training for a 5k or a half marathon? I do well for a few weeks, and then I lose my drive. I also want to know if anyone does any squats/lunges/pushups/crunches during their long runs? Thanks in advance for your help!

  1. One of the best ways to stay motivated for those longer runs for ½ marathon training is to find a local run club.  There are run clubs all over the US and Canada and I assume all over the world.  Most clubs offer midweek runs as well as the LSD long run on the weekend.  There is really nothing like running with folks all with the same goal as you.

As for strength exercises, absolutely do they make a difference, in running long distances.  By strengthening your core you will have better posture, which will help you run more economically during the long haul.  Many of the clubs offer coaches to help you with those types of exercises as well.

    Good luck
