Question:

Comcast Cable/Phone with DirecTV TV?

My wife and I are moving to a rental home where they have recently done all the home run wiring. Since this is a rental, we have no ability to make alterations, such as running new wires, etc. We are looking into getting Comcast Internet/VoIP and continuing with our DirecTV agreement. However, is this possible given that the home appears to only be wired for one cable? I'm really confused on this one and can use some help:

Can we have Comcast Internet/VoiP and DirecTV function on one cable run? We would likely have 3 receivers (all 3 DVR and 2 of them HD). Could we possibly be able to watch one channel and record another?

Thanks in advance. We'll need to cancel the DirecTV install and go with a triple-play from Comcast if DirecTV is a no go.

  1. Call your landlord (or property management) and ask them what kind of work they're willing to let happen. Oftentimes a technician can use the existing wiring for cable to run the satellite signal instead. Then, you can schedule an appointment for a DirecTV tech to come out and do the work and if he can't follow the restrictions you can always say "well, thanks anyway, have a good day" and call comcast.

  2. As a cable tech I would say that if you guys had a comcast tech to come out he probably could find a way to get you a cable line dedicated to digital voice. That is really hard to say what can be hooked up without looking at your house. I would say the  triple play is way better that anything  else out there. Especially for HD direc claims to have more HD channels which they do but more that half of them are junk channels they are some generic satellite channels. As for actual programming that you would watch like sports movies shows etc. Comcast has it hands down. The DVR is awesome and yes you can reord one show and watch another or record two shows and watch something you have recorded previously. That is with the comcast DVR it has two tuners if direc has two tuners in their dvrs it will probably do the same. I will never watch TV w/o a DVR.

  3. They cannot SHARE a cable.  DirecTV can't use the cable wires anyway.  Each receiver needs its own cable to the dish .  They can't share connections either.

might as well go with triple-play.
