I complained to them several times that the technician who came to my house said I would not be charged because he said I had no "live" cables in my wall and suggested I call his "buddy" to wire it. As it turned out, I went to Direct TV and they had no problem finding a "live" cable. I complained numerous times to Comcast and spent numerous hours on hold without effect. Then I got a letter from a credit agency, I called them and they ofcourse said the issue was with Comcast. I just discovered that the Credit Agency has reported the debt to the Credit Bureau, creating an unpaid bill on what was otherwise perfect credit. I know at this point its a matter of principle and I also understand that an 80.00 bill is nothing compared to a significant drop in my credit score (yes that was the result). But on the other hand, what stops companies like like Comcast from playing fast and loose with all their customers? Whether they owe them money or not? What is the best way to proceed?

  1. Your dispute was with Comcast over whether you owed them money.  Apparently, you refused to pay instead of trying to work it out , and this is the result.

  2. Dispute it directly with the credit bureaus!  No, they can't do this, but unfortunately it happens all the time.  And one collection account can drop a score by 50 or more points within the first few months after it is reported.  By law creditors cannot take into account disputed accounts, so by disputing the collection it will help your score immediately.   Good luck, and have patience.  This could be a long process, but it could be well worth it!!

  3. You can write the collection agency for proof of debt owed. If they don't provide it within 30 days you are no longer obligated to pay the debt and you can contact the credit bureau to take off the debt.

  4. Hi,
