Comcast or DirectTV?

I'm moving and need to decide whether to go with the bundle package from Qwest (Direct TV) or Comcast? Any experiences you can share with me to help me make a decision? The prices are within $10 of each other.

  1. If you can get cable for the same price as dish (or close...) I would go with the cable....

Normally dish costs more, but gets better channels... cable is more reliable...

If the features are the same (have to have DVR...) then I would choose cable.  I bet they aren't though... I bet if you read the whole offer, the dish is the better deal (by far) in the long run, with better features.

  2. Although I am biased toward DirectTV due to all the HD channels and The NFL Ticket it really depends on what you like to watch.

If you're into a lot of "on demand" programming then cable has a lot more of this content than DirectTV, but if you don't care about that and you have HD then you MUST go with DirectTV.  Comcast claims they have more HD content but they are counting SHOWS and not channels.  DTV has channels like TBS, USA, Fuel, MTV, Food Network in HD and the list goes on and on.

Also, don't let people talk you into cable because "your TV goes out when it is cloudy or rains".  Although weather can and does affect your Sat it has to be raining EXTREMELY hard to lose your signal.  It's happened to me like 5 times in 8 years for just a minute or two and we get a lot of T storms where I live.

One last note.  I have Comcast for their internet and the customer service absoltuely SUCKS!  I was on hold over a 4 hour period just to register a Mac address for a new modem.  DTV however has excellent CS.

  3. There are a few variables to take into your decision.

Are you in a house or an apartment?

Do you have bad weather frequently?

Is your house located in dense trees?

    Do you have a HDTV?

If there are no issues regarding the mounting of the dish, etc and you have an HDTV I would definitely go with DirecTV over Comcast.  DirecTV has a ton of HD channels right now (for about $10-15/mo on top of the regular package) and doesn't cost a lot of money to get into (despite what the cable companies will tell you).    Make sure you get a HD-DVR if you go with DirecTV so you can record your HiDef programs.

If you do NOT have a HDTV then I would just go with whoever can give you the best deal.

  4. Directv is a great choice just be careful bundling with qwest. There have been lots of problems if you don't pay your bill on time. But if you do pay it on time there are not much problems. For example if you are late on a payment qwest will disconnect the services and the only way to get them back on is with qwest. Directv cannot turn them back on since qwest turned them off. And be careful of what prices they offer sometimes it is a mail in rebate to get the discounted programing. But they don't tell you that. They tell you that is the price you get.
