  1. What you need is a router (Linksys or otherwise) - that will let you network the computers and share the internet connection.  You can either do it yourself or pay the cable company to rent you the equipment.

Here's some logic for the cost:

If Comcast is like Cox, they will come and install a router for the second computer, put in the cable and hardware, and charge you extra for the second computer.

I'm guessing if it's like Cox Cable it would be like $10 per month for having a second computer and another $10 per month renting the router.  Even if they don't make you rent a router, that's $120 per year you're throwing away!

Buying your own router (cheapest I know of is Belkin 54G for $39 at most stores) is a one-time cost, and then either a long network cable ($30) or a USB WiFi adapter ($40) one-time cost to connect the other computer.  That's a one-time cost of $80 (probably $90-$100 after taxes) and you have your computer hooked up as well as wireless if you (or they) get a laptop in the future.

My math says it's far cheaper to get your own router and set it up yourself than to pay Comcast hundreds of dollars over time to have a second computer.  It pays for itself in less than a year.

My first router was a Belkin 54g (cheapest thing I could find) and came with a CD that literally guided you through every step of plugging things in through configuring security to keep others out.

If your father is concerned about others' getting in (that was my problem initially), WPA-PSK or WPA-PSK2 security with a long (at least 10 characters - use upper/lower case letters numbers and symbols) would keep anyone nearby out of your stuff.

Here's what I use for one of my computers...I know it works:

  2. Look for aan inexpensive router.  Show your dad the price (you can find them on sale for <$50) You than run a cat 5 cable to the room you want the secont computer connect it to the router, config the router to work with your comcast cablemodem...voila...btw tell your dad the router also worls as a firewall to help make your surfing safer

  3. if your dad likes throwing away money he can donate it instead of giving it to comcast for a 2nd unneeded internet connection..

    get a linksys =)

  4. Comcast won't normally come out and pull a second system out to your house.  What they will do is put in their own router (if their Modem does not have any ports available) and pull a line to the second room.

They will just charge for the service call plus the jack install.  Not sure if they will have a monthly charge.

How about a D-Link instead Dad?

Does the Modem have an extra port on the back that is not in use?  You could run a line yourself to the other room.  Or buy a cheap router (not wireless) and do the same thing.
