Comeback king Shaun Murphy beats Mark Allen 5-4 – 2011 Shanghai Masters tournament
The 29-year-old Englishman, Shaun Murphy, has beaten the former World Amateur Champion, Mark Allen, by a frame score of 5-4 in a best-of-nine frames last-16 match of the 2011 Bank of Communication Shanghai Masters tournament.
This event is currently underway at the Shanghai Grand Stage in Shanghai, China.
It was yet another mesmerising performance from the Magician, Murphy, as he was down by 2-4 before he battled back and registered an impressive 5-4 win over his Welsh opponent. For Allen in the meanwhile it was a dreadful defeat.
Murphy, who won his opening round match from 1-4 down against the Spaceman, Dominic Dale, started off with magnificent 102 break before the Pistol, Allen, fired in breaks of 53, 58 and 100 to clinch four of the next five frames.
The match was almost through at that point but everybody was left flabbergasted when Murphy who was down by two frames with three to play clawed back and won all of the three frames straight to spot a birth in the last 8.
Murphy produced a tremendous 143 clearance, the highest break of the tournament thus far, in the seventh frame and then with a carving 77 he levelled the score-line at 4-4.
In the final frame a few chances were exchanged but in the end it was again Murphy who dominated the frame with a 68-3 score-line.
The Brit afterwards shared his feelings with the media. Murphy claimed winning is all that matters no matter how one wins.
“It doesn't matter if you win 5-0 in 30 minutes, or 5-4 in three days, you've just got to get to five frames,” said 2005 World Champion Murphy. “So far I've produced my best when my back has been against the wall, although I would prefer to win matches easily.”
Shaun Murphy has now set up a potential clash with the Jester from Leicester, Mark Selby, who beat Nigel Bond by a frame score of 5-3, in the next round. It is certainly a match not to be missed and all that is left to see is whether Murphy can defeat Selby
or not.
