What is the sleeper car like on an Amtrack train and how is the food? I am thinking about taking a trip by train but not if it is anything like riding a Greyhound bus.

  1. I took the A train from Newark N.J. to Baltimore. Don't know about the food or the sleeper car but its better then the Greyhound.

  2. Well its much better than Grey Hound thats for sure. The food is decent, nothing wow, but nothing eww either. As for how the sleeper car, I cannot say. But I have always been happy with AMtrack.

  3. Absolutely do not take a Greyhound Bus! Amtrak is much better. The sleeper cars on an Amtrak train are relatively small and you can get frustrated very easily if you stay in them the entire trip. However unlike on a greyhound bus you can actually walk up and down the train throughout the various cars, including the sight seeing car and dinner car. dont expect vast luxuries on an Amtrak though, electrical outlets are space and their is no wifi. The trains crews are usually very overworked and are always crappy at best so try and steer clear of them. The food in the snack car is mediocre, lots of packaged treats and microwavable meals. Soda's are $2.50 and a "dam good cookie" is like $2.00 so make sure you bring lots of your own food, because you dont want to go broke. The dining car however is staffed by somewhat nice waitress's, the food is pretty good, it ranges from steak to grilled cheese but just like the snack car it is very expensive (average meal is $10.00). You may as well bring your own food. The entertainment is 2 small CRT televisions with little sound, playing outdated movies. You might want to bring a laptop with you. Regardless of Amtrak shortfalls however, it is still much better than a greyhound bus!

  4. Amtrack's better!!!  Greyhound provides you with nothing but a seat and a toilet to pee in.  You bring the rest.  Amtrack has a dining car and a little store where you can buy food and drink.  I don't know about the sleeper cars, though, but I'm sure they're better than a bus!!!

  5. Sleeper rooms are small but comfy...bathroom down the corridor, etc...dining car food is super, and with Amtrak the meals are included with your sleeper room when you pay for same.  Unlike Greyhound [shudder] you can wander up and down and look at stuff...there's a lounge car with snacks & drinks and such, nice big windows to watch scenery... and the seats are comfortable plus with recliner foot-thingies so you can stretch out and read.   Or snooze.  Or watch a better range of people than [shudder] are usually on Greyhound.

  6. Just don't plan on showering in a decent shower.  As seen on an episode of s*x and the City the shower really is connected to the toilet.

  7. The sleepers are comfortable. It's made for two or more (bedrooms). The food is decent. There's a snack bar and an observation car. In the evening, they show movies. Overall everyone is nice. The train is way better than taking the Greyhound. I'm always miserable on the bus.

  8. The food is kind of institutional tasting, ok but not that great and not cheap either. Better than bus stop food though LOL.The days of actually cooking on trains are long gone. It is waaay better than riding a bus, you can get up and move about. Pack some food for lunch if you like. Nothing like a good sandwich and a bottle of wine on a train with friends.

  9. You'll really like it if you're used to Greyhound.   Amtrak intends their long-haul trains to be luxury travel.

The sleepers are nice.  The food is excellent.

Long-haul trains (overnight) have a full-service diner that's, I'd say, 2-star for a San Francisco restaurant, both in quality and price.  I'd call it a step up from Applebee's or Chili's. Check the menus at

The meals are free for people in sleepers!

All Amtrak trains also have a cafe car which sells, well, pretty much 7-11 food.  Prepackaged sandwiches, microwaved burgers and dogs, bags of chips etc.  It's junk, don't waste your appetite on it when you could be eating seared salmon in the dining car.

Bringing your own food is also allowed, but why!?  On a long haul train, diner food is yummy.  On a short haul, eat before or after.
