Did u hate the idea of becoming a woman? I hated it cuz in my culture(Tamil) the attainment of puberty was marked with an extragavant ceremony, which i found highly sexist. I mean i was adorned with jewellery and flowers and i was also taught to become a woman. You werent allowed to look at men for a few days. I felt like i was being treated like a commodity. According to this article that i read the purpose of this ceremony is to prepare the gurl for a wedded life. Its sick. Do u think such ceremonies should even be allowed?

  1. simple marriage is so gud;no ex.burdan.

  2. Its really a good question. I do agree with you, as we are heading towards 21st century. But we are following it traditionally.

In olden days, this function is very much required (even today, if you understand the reality and you have time and you have the people to tell why are we doing this).

For most of the traditional activites which we follow even today has special meanings. Some of the activities are not required in this new era.

Why did they do like that in olden days (from my understanding): In olden days, no body will talk about s*x so openly as we do today. Girl's used to get afraid when they see blood and suffer alot to tell their parents. When they get married or met with a boy, they don't know what to do exactly. Many other things were there. Which lead to such kind of function, where they can talk about it. As you said, its not allowed to see men for few days, it might mean that "one should not look at the men in the sense, what she learned from past few days". It doesn't mean you should not look at men.

Here is one link which I found in net and seems to be useful for this Q: http://www.hinduismtoday.com/archives/19...

It seems to be that: Those days are purely to educate a girl and her friends about what happened, what is happening... and what will/can happen in future. Its just educate. Yes, If you are well educated and you feel no suggestions are required, This kind of fucntions are not required.

May be boring, its my personal opinion.

  3. I know I was also raised in a Tamil culture and the expectations were the same, and I'm tired of being so mistreated and forced to engage in this sort of oppression.

    These ceremonies should be banned.
