Comma to the Top eyes a return to the races after a bullet five furlong ahead of the Underwood Stakes
Comma to the Top who was riding the wind last year by winning the Real Quiet Stakes, Grade 3 Generous Stakes and Grade 1 CashCall Futurity Stakes on the trot, which gave him the edge over other juvenile colts also won the Horse of the Meet honours.
Gary Barber’s 3-year-old colt, Comma to the Top is showing his willingness to come back to the races after an unplaced finish in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby in May this year. Peter Miller trained colt was expected to bring the goods this season as well, but miserably failed to show a single finish on the board this year.
However, it was about this time last year, when Comma to the Top raised the bar and easily leaped over to post himself a 5 race winning streak which of course got broken this year when he finished fourth in the Grade 3 El Camino Real Derby on 12 February, 2011, at Golden Gate Fields.
Rewinding back to 2010, the son of Bwana Charlie, out of mare Maggie’s Storm by Stormy Atlantic, Comma to the Top broke his maiden in his third attempt. However, he was completely outclassed in his next two starts, Grade 2 Best Pal and Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity, he finished 4th and 6th, respectively.
His performance against the graded stakes company prompted Miller to send Comma to the Top to a starter allowance which he easily bagged and immediately an allowance race which he also won. Both races were at Golden Gate Fields over its synthetic surface.
The Real Quiet was against Prayer for Relief, but Comma to the Top downed his rampant opponent to finish second.
Comma to the Top should’ve taken the allowance route right after his maiden special, though a return to Stakes company was rather a stepping stone towards a graded stakes win and onwards he bagged a grade 3 and a grade 1 race which ultimately earned him the Horse of the Meet honours.
Comma to the Top signalled a return to races when he worked a bullet five furlong in 59 seconds flat on Cushion track, and will be pointed toward the Grade 3 Vernon O Underwood Stakes at six furlongs, and from there the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes.
