Command and Conquer: Generals 2 to use Battlefield 3’s FrostBite 2 engine
Electronic Arts have finally confirmed that the sequel to one of their most acclaimed titles, Command and Conquer: Generals, is already under development under the studio BioWare Victory.
The original Generals game gained cult status soon after its release in 2003 as it was the only modern-military real time strategy game that appealed the vast majority of gamers at the time. A number of add-ons and expansion packs soon followed yet the true
sequel has only just been announced.
Gamers will have to wait another agonising year or so, with the game primed for 2013 release window, though some can take solace in the fact that 2011 is almost at an end.
Many analysts were predicting that the game BioWare Victory were trying to keep under wraps was Generals 2, yet it is always better to hear it from the horse’s mouth and that is exactly what happened.
A statement in the official Electronic Arts blog read, “World leaders are mere seconds away from signing a peace treaty and bringing an end to a global war when a devastating terrorist attack rips through the conference, killing everyone in attendance, leaving
only the world’s military superpowers in control.”
It sounds rather generic to be honest, but then again not every RTS game can have the depth in story that EA’s Tiberium series has been gifting players over the years.
The statement continued, divulging more detail, “It’s up to you to assume their roles, take command of their forces and conquer global terrorism once and for all. Players will take control of three unique factions in a thrilling single-player campaign, and
with friends online in cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes.”
With the premise and a few of the game’s main modes out of the way BioWare’s General Manager, Dr. Ray Muzyka was also on hand to discuss just how excited the studio was to be behind the sequel’s development.
He explained that BioWare Victory was a new label that had been added to the original BioWare brand and its focus was to bring engaging gameplay among other things to the Generals’ universe. The GM also said that their aim was to bring a gritty modern war
experience that other titles in the same genre were not providing.
The fact that the game is being built on the, oh-so-impressive, Frostbite 2 engine, the same one used to power EA’s modern military first-person shooter Battlefield 3, means that gamers can expect plenty of destruction when the game finally does hit shelves.
A number of screenshots have been released for the game and each looks as, if not more, impressive than the last. The question remains as to whether Generals 2 will be able to recapture the status that its predecessor managed all those years ago.
