Just a Few Questions
So many have come this way and gone,
Does it matter that we two
Came down this path at dawn
And sat on this rock and felt the soft rain on our heads?
Or that we were a magic pair,
Knowing all the world and its meanings,
Forever parts of it, coherent in its nature?
Did it matter to you that I touched your closed eyes,
To sense the beauty of their contoured teguments,
And said bold things about the rightness of your brow?
All love would be regained and harms forgot if that were true,
But you cannot say it to me now.
And though you smiled, did you sleep
While I watched your face?
Could this be lost in time
That we did such things,
And loved,
And had our love?
Even among the many,
Could such wonder be lost?
