Question:

Commercial Fan motor troubleshooting? Wires not labeled.

I'm a beginning electrician 5 months out of school. I have a question on a commercial fan motor that I'm working on. It's not in front of me, so I'll try to describe it the best I can. I know it's a Dayton 115v,1/2 HP, 7.1 Amp, Single phase, Single voltage with a 17.5 micro Farad capacitor. First of all, no wires are labeled. How do I know which wires are T1, T2,T3,T4, etc. Also, there is no wiring diagram on the motor. I would have to write down how it was wired before disconnecting. I believe there was an orange, yellow, red, black, and I think brown. I'm not sure. Has ANYONE had any experience with these motors, and could you please tell me how to know which wires are which? From there, I'll know how to troubleshoot the rest.. Thank you

  1. I would go to Grainger with the motor specs and have them match it up with that Dayton motor ,then you can look at the wiring diagram on their motor.I don't think anyone would remember if they were not looking at the diagram unless they had just wired that paticular motor in the last day or so.Good luck.
