Commercial food or home made diet for dogs? 10 points for best answer!?

I am reading alot on the net about breeders and owners who claim commercial dog food is full of cancer causing chemicals, road kill, eveneuthanizedd dogs and cats. They claim that dogs live longer and are healthier if fed home made diets; mixes made from meat/protein, vegetables, dairy products like yogurt and cottage cheese, etc.

Anyone out there using home made diets? How are your dogs doing?

  1. Hi! :)

At this point nobody should be buying Ol' Roy or anything like that.  The best thing to buy is holistic/natural high quality kibble.  You can also mix in a little canned food (high quality) and some cottage cheese, yogurt, and certain fruits and vegetables for treats.  You  need to be careful with RAW feeding to, especially for older dogs and puppies.  Also to make sure yoour dog is getting enough nutrients.

  2. Mine are going on home-made diets after they finish their dog food.

Apparently you see a change in them after a month. ;)

  3. Well, I can't imagine its THAT BAD! I know c**p like "Ol Roy" from Wal-Mart isn't the healthiest dog food. I give mine pedigree and they are all fine. The problem with making your own is make sure you are giving your dog all the vitamins and nutrients to have a well balanced food, that will meet his nutritional needs. By the way, I have rescued several dogs over the years, fed pedigree for years and all have done very well.

  4. Commercial dog foods are c**p and pretty much everything sold at grocery stores and even many pet supply shops are commercial garbage.

But holistic dog foods are much better and use human grade ingredients and are every bit as good as a a home made diet but take out the guess work. I used to fee home made until I found a food brand I felt good about and they are doing just as good on it if not better than on the home made food.

Here's a good site to see what I am talking about. Not all foods are created equal.
