Commercialbank Qatar Masters, Kaymer falters while Goosen perks up
World number two, Martin Kaymer, failed to impress the crowd by compiling a score of 77 in the first round of the Commercialbank Qatar Masters on Thursday.
The four-time winner of 2010 failed to comprehend the course after the strong winds made it difficult for him to putt and drive. The winner of Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship compiled a scorecard in shades of blue and black. Blue signifies
a bogey, whereas, black denotes a double-bogey.
Kaymer, who is bidding for the world number one rank teed off from the back, as it was relatively easier, but could not cash in on the opportunity. He smashed the second shot on the 12th hole against the 30mph-wind and crashed
in the middle of the fairway. The veteran attempted another try, but failed to reach the par safely.
That was only the start! The 25-year-old hit a tee shot on the par-4 15th hole with a driver, but the powerful opponent drove the shot into huge rocks, which ultimately resulted in a double-bogey six. A little further, Kaymer
encountered another bogeyman and wrapped the back nine with a score of four-over-par.
The scorned player walked towards the front nine with little fate and once again failed to put up a fight against the wind. He surrendered with another loss and a score of five-over-par, which was eight strokes behind the leader, Retief
Goosen.
Meanwhile, Goosen fought well and successfully managed to keep the score in the realms of par. He drafted a score of 69 with the help of six birdies against two bogeys.
The player was pleased with his game. He demonstrated that while speaking to the press. He said, “I drove it nicely, but it was tough to get the ball close to the flags and when you were putting you were getting blown all over the
place".
Goosen was the only veteran, who remained vaulted to the ground against the wind. Players like Kaymer, Louis Oosthuizen, Ian Poulter, and Lee Westwood were swept off their feet despite having ample prowess in windy conditions.
Before coming to the venue, Kaymer was eyeing the world number one rank, as he was a few points away from the throne. The player needs to win or finish second to replace the reigning king, Westwood. With the kind of game witnessed
today, chances of the transition seem slim.
